Voice Teacher
What do I teach?
As a teacher of voice, I relish working with passionate students of every age. I know that a good classically grounded technique opens up possibilities for greater vocal expression while maintaining good health. Having enjoyed a long professional career I know the importance of good vocal hygiene. Eight shows a week with Phantom of the Opera in Toronto brought that home!
I love teaching in a variety of styles. I myself began as a country and western singer who played guitar from the age of 6 and moved through Broadway to opera. In my studio, I focus on art songs through the ages in different languages, Broadway, Jazz
standards and for some students, through to opera and oratorio (for those with the instruments for it.) I focus on technical skill in my studio. Breath and voice production, healthy body alignment (Alexander Technique inspired), relaxation, and finally freely produced resonant sound. The more a student is able to work with technical skill in singing, the more ease and joy they experience in the process. For those who come to me wanting to sing Broadway and are nervous about classical vocal grounding, I say - you can paint in three colors’ but wouldn’t you rather paint with more? That is what good technique gets you. A bigger palate for expression. Not only Broadway calls for that. All kinds of singing need it. I want my students to have the skill to take the idea they have of the song in their heads, into reality! My wish is for each student to have a beautiful instrument that tells amazing stories through music.
This sounds good to me. What happens next?
I have limited space for 12 to 17 year olds -regular weekly students during the academic year. You can apply for these spaces beginning each year in June.
If you would like to come for occasional lessons you can contact me for a complimentary consultation. A voice teacher needs to be a good match personally for there to be growth, so an interview is required before lessons begin.
If you are tweaking something for an audition I love working with performers both professional and amateur. I’m delighted to assist you in getting your pieces ready for a one off lesson.
